Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Wine & Beer & Music, too! More than a Coffee Shop…..Much, Much More!
I visited Aromas about 5 years ago with Eddie before we lived here in Williamsburg. I remembered it being a neat, funky place to eat, but we hadn’t been back to eat since moving here to the area. After our revisit the other night, I couldn’t believe I wasted 5 years without going back! What I think makes this place special is the fact that it really surprises you once you walk in. You think it’s just a simple coffee shop with a few pastries, but then you see items like “Stone Ground Grits and Shrimp” and “Caribbean Blackened Salmon” listed on the menu, and other scrumptious pastries and cakes in the display case.
I am not one to typically order a salad for my meal, so I was surprised how much I enjoyed both the House Salad and Asian Steak Salad that we tried. The Stone Ground Grits and Shrimp was really good, too. I would have been fine if the whole dish was swimming in that shrimp BBQ sauce! At the conclusion of our meal we also tried the very unique apple pie with cheddar cheese slices on top. This was a first for me! We couldn’t leave without trying a coffee item, so they suggested we taste their Aromaccino, which I really enjoyed, even though I am not a “coffee person”. I had to control myself from drinking too much caffeine because it was so tasty.
My Favorite Thing: The Asian Steak Salad. I honestly wanted to eat the whole thing right there because I liked it so much. The combination of the two sauces they used were amazing. I’m drooling right now wanting to have it again.
What I would like to try next time: Portobello Caps (Two Roasted Portobello caps with basil pesto marinara & melted cheese served with mixed greens). I’m a sucker for mushrooms…I couldn’t help but pick this.
Charming, Artsy, Fun, Romantic…DELICIOUS!
You know those restaurants that end up showcased on those Food TV shows? The ones with a really cool atmosphere, charming owners, and dishes so creative and appetizing you begin to ridicule and berate your poor little peanut butter sandwich sitting by the couch on your side? That’s Aroma’s. Come here, enjoy the atmosphere and the food, and then send emails to those Food TV shows telling them what they’re missing here in Williamsburg.
The feel here is definitely fun and creative, like a lot of college-town eateries, but it also has a sophisticated and charming quality that comes out in the food. Partake of some of it sitting inside surrounded by the various artwork, funky color schemes and high energy of the Aroma’s crowd. Or take it outside and relax cafe-style on one of the great little streets in Williamsburg. Either way, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the atmosphere and the food.
Yes, the food. Amazing. The Aroma’s House Salad – “Mixed greens, cranberries, candied pecans, tomatoes, cucumbers & onions with bleu cheese crumbles & Cider Vinaigrette” was really good. Those little candied pecans were awesome. I could eat a million of them. I LOVED their Caribbean Blackened Salmon – “Atlantic Salmon filet served on a bed of exotic grains with fire roasted vegetables, plus a vegetable medley drizzled with honey citrus chili glaze“. One of the best Salmon dishes I’ve ever had. The bed of grains and vegetables combined with that perfectly cooked and seasoned salmon went about as well together as any dish I can remember. And then I tried their infamous Stone Ground Grits & Shrimp – “A Southern specialty with caramelized BBQ shrimp served over a mound of creamy stone ground grits garnished with cheddar cheese“. What a great dish. Those big creamy grits with the shrimp smothered in their tasty BBQ sauce was delicious. I can see why it has received so much attention. We also had one of their coffee drinks, since, well, they ARE a coffeehouse. The Aromacinno™ – “Coffee Smoothie with Caramel & Whipped Cream“. Mmmmm. So good.
We had a great visit. I really enjoyed sitting outside on a perfect day savoring all the delicious dishes we had sampled. I can’t wait to come back. I hear they have a fantastic breakfast menu. Maybe Aroma’s Review #2 will be coming shortly
My Favorite Thing: Caribbean Blackened Salmon. One of the best dishes I’ve had in a long time.
What I would like to try next time: Cheese or Chocolate Fondue and S’mores For Two or Four. Cool! I told you they were fun!
