Warm, Delicious & Made to Order
“The best food in the WORLD.” That’s what Eddie says about donuts. And I’m sure a number of you out there don’t disagree. Ever since moving to Williamsburg, he’d always say how Williamsburg needs a local donut shop. And how well it would do here. So much so, that he wanted to start a contest on our site to see if we can show enough interest in town to bring one here. He even thought of the idea of opening one himself. But that’s no longer necessary. Because one has come…
Duck Donuts opened its doors off Monticello Ave. back in October, and it had an incredible opening. It wasn’t the first though. The original Duck Donuts started in the Outer Banks – Duck, NC to be exact (hence the name). They opened in 2006 and have now grown into four Outer Banks locations, one in VA Beach, and of course, ours in Williamsburg.
What sets Duck Donuts apart is their made-to-order philosophy. Each donut is warm when you get them. You won’t be eating donuts that have been sitting on a shelf or in a case all day drying up. They are freshly made. You let the donut makers know what frosting/glaze and toppings you want and they put it together right there on the spot. You can’t get much more personalized than that! I’m used to seeing either no donut making mechanism at all or a factory-like huge machine to punch out donuts. So the first time I went to Duck Donuts, I was surprised to see their very small-scale donut machine that presses out your donuts when you order them. It adds a nice touch to their custom and “homemade” feel.
If you’re going to get a dozen, I highly recommend ordering a box of “Assorted”. The employee donut “Topper” will then use their own unique combinations to give you a chance to try almost everything. No two orders are ever the same. And if you’re looking for a place to get caffeinated, Duck Donuts has more than just donuts. There are multiple different flavored lattes and coffees that even looked tempting to me – a non-coffee drinker. I can’t wait to see what my next order of Assorted Donuts will be… and maybe I’ll even get a coffee.
Mindy’s Favorite Thing: Even though I am partial to all maple bacon donuts, I just couldn’t resist scarfing down the peanut butter frosted, chocolate drizzled coconut one. It feeds my peanut butter obsession.
What Mindy would like to try next time: Whenever I have visited, their “donuts of the day” have been interesting and tasty. So I would like to try whatever their next donut of the day is.
